We had a question relating to a sermon about the Sabbath, and the question is:
Who or what has the seventh day of creation been set aside for? me? God? the community?
Well, the short answer is: YES! There’s a verse in Leviticus which combines all three: “There are six days when you may work, but the seventh day is a day of sabbath rest, a day of sacred assembly. You are not to do any work; wherever you live, it is a sabbath to the Lord.” (Leviticus 23:3)
You need the rest from your “six days” of work – a little sleep on a Sunday afternoon is a wonderful blessing.
But also worshipping God is good for your spiritual health, and it honours him (it’s a sabbath “to the Lord”).
And when we worship together as a community, (that’s “sacred assembly”), we have an opportunity to encourage and to be encouraged. Now whether you’re an introvert or an extrovert: you might fill that day with a bigger crowd of people or a smaller one… that’s fine.
This question was originally answered in our evening service on 24 November 2024. I’ll aim to post another question and answer next week. You can read about how our question box works here.
