Question Box – Sleep

question-box

Here’s another question arising from to a sermon about the Sabbath, and the question is:

“You spoke about rest from a sabbath / lack of work perspective, but how does sleep apply? Are there verses to link to this?”

OK, here’s two verses:

  • Psalm 127:2 says that sleep is a good gift of God: “He grants sleep to those he loves.”
  • However, its also possible to sleep too much: Proverbs 6:10 “A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest— and poverty will come on you like a thief.” It’s saying if you want to stay in bed all day and not go to work, well… its not going to be good for your financial wellbeing.

And so we’ve just got to be wise about sleep. Look, there is so much medical research out there about how much sleep you need, and how important regular sleep is for our mental and physical health. And sure, sometimes there’s a deadline: you’ve got to finish and essay and it turns into a late-nighter; its OK to push your limits occasionally, But don’t do that night after night, be wise, and plan how you’re going to catch up.

This question was originally answered in our evening service on 24 November 2024. I’ll aim to post another question and answer next week. You can read about how our question box works here.
